VIDEO RECAP: Freshman takes center stage as John Jay girls rip Arlington

WICCOPEE – And a freshman shall lead them.

Erin Theiller had two goals and an assist on Wednesday, easily passing her indoctrination test into the pressure-cooker known as the Arlington-John Jay high school girls soccer rivalry, and the Patriots beat the Admirals, 5-1.

Jay is now 5-2 overall while the two-time defending Section One, Class A champs dropped to 5-3-1.

Theiller set the tone with a goal in the third minute of player, and later assisted on Kelly Lewis’ goal as Jay was prepped to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. But lo and behold, the Patriots squeezed out one more with 90 seconds to play for what turned out to be a back-breaking 3-0 lead at intermission.

“We have been struggling with our set pieces. For us to get a goal off a corner kick was huge, not to mention so late in the half to put us up three,” John Jay coach C.J. Greenwood said. “It made things a little more comfortable at halftime. But I told the girls, Kieran (Arlington coach Kieran McIlvenny) is a mad scientist. He’s going to figure out something to break us down. The question is, can we make adjustments to get out of here.”

They did.

And our Charlie Cornacchio was there to chronicle the big win on video.
