Girls soccer: Diana Nelson lifts John Jay, 2-1

First varsity goal KOs Cornwall; Burns picks up two assists

Diana Nelson netted the game winner, her first career varsity goal, as the John Jay High School girls soccer team slipped past host Cornwall 2-1 in a non-league match on Tuesday.

“Corinne (Burns) drew numbers, passed the ball and Diana hit a one-time ball into the net,’’ John Jay coach C.J. Greenwood said. “When Corinne has the ball, we’ve got to get forward and to far post. Diana did so and got her first varsity goal.’’

Burns also assisted on the tying goal by Robin Seward in the fourth minute of the second half. Nelson scored four minutes later.

“It was a hard-fought game,’’ Greenwood said. “It was a good match for us being we haven’t played in nine days. We worked hard all over the field and it was great to see.’’

John Jay (3-1) travels to Mahopac on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match.

“The girls know they have to continue down the path they’re trying to set,’’ Greenwood said. “They have to pressure the ball all over the field and stay organized. They have to make good decisions when they have the ball.’’
